NZWAR has released a new practical survival resource for civilians: the Wartime Food & Resource Cards.

This 82-page handbook is designed for situations where normal systems may be disrupted — including prolonged power cuts, supply shortages, evacuation, disaster response, and wartime conditions.
The purpose is simple: help ordinary people make better decisions about food, water, fuel, storage, preservation, wild food, portable rations, and long-term nutrition when resources are limited.
The cards cover practical topics such as:
- Food storage and pantry planning
- Refrigerator and freezer food rescue after a power outage
- Emergency water treatment and storage
- Low-fuel cooking
- Meat, fish, grain, vegetable and fat preservation
- Fishing, shellfish, rural food sources and selected wild foods
- 24-hour, 72-hour and 7-day portable ration planning
- Basic long-term wartime nutrition
The handbook is built around simple household-scale methods rather than laboratory procedures. It also includes clear safety warnings and practical decision-making rules such as:
Safety first.
If unsure, do not eat.
Water and fuel matter as much as food.
Fast decisions can save more food.
One of the most important recommendations is to print the handbook before an emergency.
A paper copy does not depend on internet access, battery life, Wi-Fi, or a working phone. Keeping it near or on top of the refrigerator means it can be reached immediately when the power fails and food rescue decisions have to be made quickly.
This handbook is one part of the wider NZWAR civilian preparedness project. It does not replace official emergency advice, medical care, or professional rescue services. Its role is to provide practical knowledge that can still be used when normal infrastructure is disrupted.
